American Chip Spice

Chips chips chips chips chips chips… mmm love chips.  My favourite food?  Possibly!

A friend of mine posted about this product on her blog a few weeks ago (http://danisdietdiary.wordpress.com/2011/03/19/american-chip-spice/) and for some reason it reminded me of my childhood.  I’ve no idea if it was this actual product we used to have on the table at home or something else, but I remember having this sort of thing on my chips when I was a kid.

Within a few minutes of reading Dani’s post I had ordered some American Chip Spice direct from their website (reminding you of your childhood is a great marketing tool!).  This chip spice isn’t actually American though… it’s from Hull.  It’s basically a combination of salt, garlic, paprika, tomato and onion in a shaker that you sprinkle over chips (and other things) instead of salt or other seasoning.

From the website:

American Chip Spice is an american-style seasoning salt intended for chips, french fries, bbqs, burgers, and more.  Originating in Hull,  it is most commonly available in chip shops & takeaways in the Hull & East Yorkshire area and has cult status among locals and people that at one time have lived in the area.

For me, the best thing to do with American Chip Spice, is to use it over home made chips or wedges during cooking – so the flavours become part of the potato.  The combination of garlic and paprika is perfect for this, and as it’s salty you don’t need to add any more salt when serving.  Don’t scrimp though – use loads!  It’s also perfect for seasoning at barbecues – great when sprinkled on burgers and chicken – I’m really looking forward to barbecue season!

The 100g shaker is £3.99 from American Chip Spice – and if you follow them on Twitter you’ll find a discount code for 10% off.  If you’ve never had this, then get some!
