A Thermostat That Learns – Nest Learning Thermostat

Ever thought your thermostat at home isn’t clever enough?

Former iPod designer Tony Fadell (along with an army of engineers) has come up with this unique thermostat for your home – the Nest Learning Thermostat.

Nest Learning Thermostat

You can tell this has actually been “designed”.  It is beautiful (am I allowed to say that about a thermostat?!).  Very Apple actually.  It’s very geeky of me to really like this invention, but I really do – when I found out about it a couple of days ago I just had to share.

The technology inside seems very smart.  It uses it’s internal computer to learn your daily routine and programme itself without you having to worry.  It remembers when you get up in the morning, when you go to bed and what temperature you like your house at.  It starts learning as soon as you install it, starts remembering your routine from day two, within a week is switching itself up and down, and as time goes on it works out what will make you most comfortable.  It even knows when you are out – and won’t waste energy when you are away.

There is even an App (of course!) so you can control your Nest remotely, so you can make sure you have a nice warm house when you arrive back home after a particularly cold day out.  As you use it, it adapts to your changing life. Quite something really.

Looking at this and some of the reviews around already I’d say this is a really important invention for our home.  I always love the idea of gadgets and tech that improve our life in a very slick and well designed way, and this is definitely one of them.

The website says if you can change a light fitting you can install Nest in place of your existing thermostat, so this is a DIY product. But it is only available in the US at the moment – priced at $249 (from retailers such as Best Buy).  If – when – this is brought out in the UK I will seriously be considering it for my home.
