Blogging is a Door – Thinking About Splodz Blogz

posted in: Blogging, General Post, Personal | 6

I’ve been thinking a lot recently about Splodz Blogz. Over the last couple of months I’ve been considering quite carefully what it is, why I started it back in early 2010, and most importantly what I want to do with it. I’ve been asking questions of other bloggers and doing some research online about blogging in general. I’ve been making some notes and listing some aims – but I’ve not done anything about them other than simply thinking.

Then yesterday I was given a bit of a kick up the bum by my friend Tara when I read her blog post “News”. Her post made a lot of sense to me and it has caused me to want to take all those thoughts and ideas I’ve been having about Splodz Blogz and actually put them into practice.

She quite rightly speaks of blogging being a window into her world. I read her posts because I want to know where she is and what she’s doing – and because I’m incredibly jealous of her travels! I like seeing her photos and I’m genuinely interested in what she is experiencing. You should give her blog a follow!

She goes on to say that blogging is also a door. It is a way to make connections, ask questions, learn something, have conversations, make friendships. She is quite right – blogging is a fabulous online media, it is supposed to be interactive, it is about sharing ideas and experiences, is is the perfect tool to create a vibrant and fun place on the web. And that is absolutely what I want from Splodz Blogz. I want to create content on here that people want to read. I want you to enjoy my posts, appreciate my photographs, and relate to what I’m talking about.

Yes, there are a whole load of product reviews on this blog. I love that part of what I do, it’s fun to try out new things and I’m not going to stop any time soon. But Splodz Blogz was never designed to be a “review blog”; it is my “everything blog”. I want to share with you my experiences and my life journey – to show that life is all about the journey. The product reviews I choose to do fit in very nicely with that most of the time, especially when they help me get outdoors or eat better, and I hope it comes across that my reviews are personal posts not created from press releases but written based on my own testing. But most of my ideas for developing Splodz Blogz are based on different kinds of posts. I’m talking about travel, experiences, lists, hints and tips, photography; in fact quite a lot of the things that Splodz Blogz was designed to host in the first place.

So thanks Tara, you’ve motivated me to act on all that thinking I’ve been doing. I needed that! I hope you all like what you read as I begin to put those ideas into practice.

Splodz Blogz is a Door

Don’t forget that Splodz Blogz is an unlocked door with a handle that you can open. I want you to walk through the door rather than just open the letterbox or peer through the glass. Talk to me, tell me who you are, let me know what you like and don’t like, share your ideas, comment on my posts, chat on twitter or any other social media. To continue the metaphor… open the door and reach out and I will shake your hand and invite you in.

What a lovely metaphor for blogging. I am a new blogger and still finding my voice and feet so this is good advice too!

Thanks very much. I definitely think it’s important to remember that blogging is supposed to be an interactive online media. Good luck with your blog.

I love the idea of blogging being a door into your world – and how nice to hear it’s an open one with a warm welcome on the other side! I’ve recently had a similar reflective process about my blog and where I want to take it – I initially set it up to document what remained of my maternity leave, but now that I’m going back to work I’ve decided to continue – it’s my main hobby these days and I get so much from it! Pleased to have found you through My Best Post of the Week

I agree it’s great to “make friends” with other bloggers – it’s a great community to be involved with.
