Country Crisp Review

For some reason I don’t normally eat breakfast.  I get up early enough as it is, to have to get up even earlier in order to eat something before I leave for work is just about impossible.

I am, however, a great fan of cereal.  It’s fantastic for a mid-morning snack at the weekend, for lunch, or for supper.  And I enjoy all sorts of cereals too – from the traditional Cornflakes and Weetabix (with a spoonful of sugar), through kid’s favourites Coco Pops and Frosties (bring back Lucky Charms in this country!), all the way to the healthier options like Special K and Alpen.

This week I have been testing Jordan’s Country Crisp – the Strawberry version.

Jordan's Country Crisp

This particular cereal is sold as a healthy breakfast option of wholegrain oat clusters with hazelnuts and crispy rice, along with freeze-dried strawberries.  It sits alongside Special K Red Berries and Raisin Wheats in the Supermarket – a natural, good for your body product.

You can read what Jordan’s say about it here: http://www.jordanscereals.co.uk/products/cereals/country-crisp

I have tried Country Crisp before, but not one with fruit bits in, and so I was looking forward to testing this.

Close up of the cereal

The cereal certainly looked appetising, although I have to say that the bottom of the box was full of really tiny pieces which were neither crunchy nor clusters.  This is one thing that really puts my other-half off cereals – he won’t eat those bits because they go mushy in the milk, but it doesn’t bother me as much.  I guess there is nothing that can be done about it falling apart as the box moves around in the boot of the car without adding horrible additives to keep them in one piece – I would much rather the food stay natural.

The strawberry pieces were a good size, and there were plenty of them – there is nothing worse than not having enough of the “added extra” in your cereal bowl.

I admit to ignoring the 50g plus 100ml milk serving size (as I do with all cereals) – just not enough at supper time.  If I was to have stuck to the suggestion I would have consumed 268 calories, 3.5g of saturated fat and 0.12g of salt.  I tried my first bowl on a Sunday evening at about 9pm, served with semi-skimmed milk.

Serving suggestion!

I have to say I really enjoyed this cereal, especially the addition of the strawberry pieces, it gave my bowl of food some really good flavour.  The freeze dried fruit pieces work well in cereal, it’s something I will definitely be looking out for in future.  I ate my first bowlful without reading the whole of the box, and could definitely taste the subtle vanilla/coconut finish to the clusters, it was a really nice finish to the flavour.  It was most definitely crispy, and the clusters didn’t go soggy in the milk – just the bits that crumbled off.

Having tried this version of Country Crisp I think I’ll give the Raspberry one a go next.  Jordans have definitely gained a customer.  You should try it.

If you’ve tried this cereal or the others in the Country Crisp range you should have a look at the Appreciation Society! http://www.welovecountrycrisp.co.uk/  This is a new scheme through which you can enter competitions, become a taste tester, and basically have your say about Country Crisp.  They’ve got me as a member!

Thank you very much to Jordans, who sent me the box of cereal to review.  If you would like to see a review of your product on Splodz Blogz, please get in touch.
