Salt Water Taffy

I’ve been to America a few times and have always been afraid to try Salt Water Taffy for fear of it being really salty… I received some in the post from a friend today after she brought some home from Florida and gave some away via her blog http://cathyjam.wordpress.com.

So now I have no choice… I have to try it!!

Salt Water Taffy

According to Wikipedia,

Salt water taffy is composed of sugar, cornstarch, corn syrup, glycerine, water, butter, salt, flavor, and food color. To add flavoring, vanilla, lemon, maple, or mint extracts, for example, are included. Contrary to popular belief, no coastal saltwater is used in the recipe.

Cathy sent two each of four flavours.  For some reason I was drawn to the green one first… and wow, how chewy?!! It was impossible to eat in a ladylike way – lots of horrible chewing noise tee hee hee!  But it tasted good… and not salty!! 🙂

So now I know… it’s chewy, sticky, sweet and no doubt very bad for my teeth; but at least I’ve discovered my fear of what it would taste like was completely unfounded! Next time I’m in the states I’ll be buying some.

Yea I did – green was mint right? And yellow was lemon. They were both nice. The brown one was coffee, that was ok but not my favourite. No idea what the other one was but it tasted fine lol!
