Yesterday saw the start of another Global Corporate Challenge, and once again I’ve joined with six other colleagues at work to take part.
The idea is to try and walk around the world in 16 weeks. We started in London yesterday morning and are aiming to get back again by September.
From now until early September I will be wearing a pedometer and recording my step count everyday on the GCC website. The aim is to walk at least 10,000 steps a day – which is the number doctors recommend we do to maintain a healthy lifestyle (that’s maintain, not improve, ok then!). We can also convert other forms of exercise such as cycling and swiming into steps to add to our total too (based on the ratios given by GCC).
I admit I feel totally hard done by that neither the Moonwalk or the Yorkshire Three Peaks Challenge count towards the GCC because it hadn’t quite started by then, they really would have got me off to a good start! But now I have completed my two big challenges for 2012 (apart from the whole 2012 km in 2012 that is), this should definitely help me keep up with my resolution to get outdoors more this year.
Last year I came 15th out of all the participants at my place of work (just under 100), which I was pretty chuffed with.
I took a bit of a walk up to the Cathedral in the sunshine (to get some pink grapefruit sorbet) and as a result managed 16,500 steps on day one, so that’ll do for starters. On day one last year I did 12,531 so if this is a sign of things to come then I’m gonna get a good average.
Good friend Michelle of Operation Threadbare is on a competing team where I work so I can see some (mostly) friendly competition going on over the next few weeks. She’s a keen runner and budding triathlete though so realistically I have no chance, but I’ll give it a good go! (She’s already ahead!)
Any other Splodz Blogz readers taking part this year? Let me know your team name and I’ll follow your progress!
