Walkers Deep Ridge Crisps

The last few days when I’ve been and got a drink from my local Spar shop I’ve been asked “would you like to try the new walkers crisps for 50p?”. Each time I’ve said no thanks, knowing that a box from the lovely Sam should arrive any time…

The new crisps are called Deep Ridge – they have 8mm ridges that are twice as deep as any other ridged crisps on the market, which means they are supposed to transport more crunch and more flavour. There are four flavours to choose from: Flame Grilled Steak, Mature Cheddar and Onion, Salt Vinegar and Ready Salted (although Ready Salted are only available in multi packs). I guess they’re trying to compete with McCoys.

Now, when something arrives in a big crisp box and one of your colleagues brings it to you asking if it is actually crisps, you can do nothing but open it up and share them out. I was of course happy to share – I couldn’t possibly eat a box full of crisps (no comment on that please!), so my friends dived in. We all became crisp connoisseurs and shared our thoughts with each other as we ate – my colleagues make great food testers! Here’s what they thought:

Natalie

I really liked the flavour but felt the crisps had a difficult texture to chew and were quite big but maybe I have a small mouth haha!

Kati

Good strong flavour, I liked the taste, but a bit of an odd texture and not ‘crispy’ enough.  I wouldn’t go out of my way to buy them – not as good as McCoy’s!! 🙂

Christine

I liked the texture and lightness of the crisps. The flavour was nice but I didn’t think it was any different to other salt & malt vinegar crisps . Although they were very nice, if I was eating crisps with higher fat intake and calories, I would prefer to eat a packet of McCoy’s.

Katie

I had the steak crisps and found the smell of them quite strong. I like the texture and taste but not sure they would be the sort of crisps I would have every day with my lunch, however I did enjoy them.

Judy

I chose the flame grilled steak flavour and they were exceptionally tasty.  Flavour was good, also liked the fact that the crisps were slightly thicker and more crunchy. Would purchase them.

We are a mixed bunch in the office and you can see that in the different opinions, but the general consensus was they’re good but could be better. Personally, I do enjoy a good bag of crisps, and I did enjoy these. The flavour was good and strong (although the flame steak ones did linger in the office for a little while!), and I didn’t mind the texture. I tried all three flavours I was sent (yes I am greedy) and liked them all – of the three I preferred the Salt and Malt Vinegar and if I was going to buy some for an afternoon snack it would be that flavour.

Would I buy them over McCoys? Not sure – they lack thickness. Would I buy them over normal traditional (plain old) Walkers? Still not sure – sometimes you can’t beat a packet of ready salted crisps (especially with a cheese sandwich). A nice addition to the range and one you should go and try for yourself, but to be honest I’m pretty happy with what’s available already.

What are your thoughts?

Disclaimer: I was sent a box of Walkers Deep Ridge crisps to try and write about. I have not been told what to write and I have been no less honest as a result.
