I love sour sweets. We just don’t do them right in the UK, they’re never sharp enough. When I was offered some of the new Sour Patch Kids by Maynards to review I was told they were currently the number one selling candy in the US – where I know they do sour properly – so I had to give them a go.
These little sweets are in the shape of little people. They are smaller than jelly babies and as a result you get quite a number in a packet (available in 160g sharing bags or 45g individual bags). Flavours include orange, lemon, raspberry, lime and blackcurrant They are designed to be super sour to start with, turning into sweet fruity jelly sweets before you swallow.
And oh how they zing. We opened a packet in the office and shared them around – the faces my colleagues pulled as they chomped on the Sour Patch Kids were brilliant, with squinty eyes and shooting lips. Sour? Yes, brilliantly so. The sourness doesn’t last long though, it’s soon replaced with a sugary fruity flavour that fills your mouth just like a chewed fruit pastel might. There were positive comments all round – the bag was soon emptied as friends (one in particular…!) went back to it over and over again.
We agreed it was about time we had a proper sour sweet in the UK. I think we decided the red ones were the best, and the black ones too. The yellow ones are particularly tart. You can’t stop at one though, you need lots, and lots. Very bad for your teeth and belly for sure, but hey ho!
The name Sour Patch Kids reminds me of those Cabbage Patch Dolls from my childhood though…
