Review: Sour Patch Kids Soda Popz

A little while ago I was sent some of the new Sour Patch Kids sweets to review here on Splodz Blogz; and I fell in love. They were the first properly sour sweet I’ve tried for a long time – properly ‘shoots lips’ sour to start with, turning a lovely fruity sweet flavour as you suck leaving you with a really nice and satisfying after taste. Yum.

This is the Sour Patch Kids latest incarnation – Soda Popz flavours. Instead of fruit we have cola, orangeade, cherryade, tropical and apple fizz flavours. I’m hoping for the same sour flavour followed by sweet loveliness.

I was definitely not disappointed. Really well flavoured sour jelly sweets that are exactly how you imagine they will taste – reminding me of all those brightly coloured fizzy drinks we used to get in those little bottles from the corner shop. Were they called Panda Pops?! You know the ones.

Let me take each flavour in turn:

Cola – These are just like a fizzy cola bottle, but sharper. Probably the least sour of the five flavours in the bag – subtle but lovely, with a very pleasant sweet finish.

Orangeade – Very sour to start with, makes you screw your face up (just as a sour sweet should!). They taste exactly like any generic brightly coloured orangeade does once sweet.

Cherryade – Think bright pink colouring!! I love cherry ade (almost as much as limeade!) and so this flavour brought back proper childhood memories! The sour to sweet works really well in the cherry – sadly my tongue didn’t turn red though!

Tropical – If you want the sourest of sweets in this selection then get one of these in your mouth! Wow! Definitely the most sour to begin with, in my opinion; really made me shoot my lips and screw my face up. But as soon as it turns sweet I want another one to get that hit of sharp flavour.

Apple Fizz – Some of my other favourite sour sweets are apple flavour so I had high hopes for the green ones. But to be honest they could be more sour, I think. But the flavour does work, and they have the most pleasant sweet after taste.

Of course the best thing about a bag of sour sweets is not the sourness of one single sweet, it is the sour on sour on sour you get when eating sweets in succession. Yes, each one might go sweet after a few chews, but if you have a few in a row your mouth never fully recovers in between, meaning you get a fantastic sour hit that gets better each time. Am I weird?!

I think I probably prefer the original Sour Patch Kids sweets, but these Soda Popz ones are nice and I will definitely be having some more sometime soon.

Disclaimer: I was sent some Maynards Sour Patch Kids sweets so I could write about them here on Splodz Blogz. I have not been told what to write and have been no less honest as a result of receiving them for free.
