Walk to Work Week

posted in: Health & Fitness, The Outdoors | 12

How far do you live away from work? I live around 4.5 miles from the office, which on any normal day is a bit far to walk. But as I’m a) training for the Lyke Wake Walk and b) it’s walk to work week, I thought it was compulsory! Actually I admit I shall not be commuting on foot today, mainly because I have a large parcel to take with me to post at lunch time that would be a bit cumbersome for that distance, but I have been known to do so and I intend to at some point this week. I promise.

The simple fact is that walking is amazingly good for you. Just look at these benefits…

  • Better shape – Burn calories, feel healthier and get fitter.
  • Clearer head – Blow away the cobwebs and relieve your stress levels.
  • Team spirit – Create or join a team and enjoy competing with colleagues.
  • Hidden treasures – Make new discoveries in your area.
  • Fatter wallet – Save your travel fare and walk instead.
  • Carbon buster – Cut your environmental footprint.
  • Save time – Walk during your lunch hour to get your weekend chores done.

View of the footpath along the river in Lincoln, filled with lots of people walking to work and school every morning.

And let’s face it, if you live one or two miles from work then walking will probably take you less time than faffing about with the car and finding a parking space anyway! What’s two miles? Half an hour at a brisk pace? I definitely hope you don’t drive in if you are less than a mile from the office!

Will you be walking to work this week? Every day? Just the once? Do you wish you could? Tell me about your commute.

Inspired by the BEDM topic for today – walk to work week.

I love to walk, also, but it’s very hard to do it here because the roads are crowded with cars and there are no sidewalks.

We once wanted to walk between two large shops in Orlando to save moving the car. There was no way to get between the two, and definitely couldn’t get across the road. How ridiculous in a town/city shopping area (we weren’t wanting to cross a freeway). The US definitely needs more sidewalks 🙂

4.5 miles is a lot!!! Sometimes I have to walk the 1.5 miles (Split into 1mile and 1/2 mile at either end of train) to work with massive suitcase full of school stuff which is exhausting- FOUR +miles of that….????????????????????x

4.5 miles certainly is along walk if you’ve got a massive suitcase full of stuff to carry – just a small bag for me, but it’s still a long way as it takes just over an hour so too far for every day. And I haven’t done it yet so haven’t quite kept my promise. Brought my trainers with me this morning and the intention is to walk home.

I would love to walk to work but its about 12 miles. Going there and back would leave me no time to work 🙂 I do manage a long walk with the dog morning and evening so I think that will do

I already walk to work everyday 🙂 But then it’d be ridiculous not to as it only takes me 10 minutes to get from my front door to my office.
As I don’t have a car and I’m not keen on public transport, I walk or cycle everywhere anyway.

It would take you longer to get the car off the drive and park it up again than the time it takes to walk 😉
