FIVE WINTER WALKING TIPS

posted in: The Outdoors | 6

Today I’m publishing a guest post by Georgie Moores with some top tips for enjoying the outdoors on foot this winter.

With temperatures dropping and the nights drawing in, it’s all too tempting to forgo the outdoors and curl up on the sofa with a blanket and a hot chocolate. For the brave at heart, winter heralds one of the most beautiful seasons to get outside with plenty of walking and hiking opportunities to make the most of. Follow these five tips to get the most out of the outdoors this winter.

Get the right kit

It’s important to keep warm and dry if you’re walking over winter. Opt for layers over large, bulky items, and make sure your clothes are made from quick-drying materials in case you get caught in a rain shower.

Also, pack lightweight waterproofs in case you need to make a quick change, and carry extra socks as wet feet make for unhappy walkers (and increase your risk of blisters!).

Keep yourself well fuelled

Being outside during cold weather means that your body needs a little extra energy boost to keep warm. Opt for hearty, nutritious foods that will give you a slow release of energy. Bananas and porridge are perfect for this, and are easy to pack and prepare whilst you’re out and about.

Stop to admire the change of season

Winter is arguably the most beautiful season to get outdoors, and snow-capped mountains or frosty mornings can look like something straight from a fairytale. Take time to admire the change of seasons and the different wildlife you’ll be able to see.

Plan for any eventuality

Winter weather in the UK can be fickle at the best of times, often switching between glorious sunshine and pouring rain in a matter of minutes. As well as making sure you’re appropriately dressed, be sure to have researched your routes before setting out. Watch out for rocks which could become slippery when wet, or getting stranded should the weather turn. The Ramblers Charity has plenty of advice to make sure you stay safe when out walking.

Don’t put too much pressure on yourself

Although winter can be a beautiful time to get outdoors, don’t put too much pressure on yourself! Sometimes we all need a weekend on the sofa or spent with family and friends, so don’t be too tough on yourself if you skip a walk or two this winter. The trails will still be there waiting for you next time you lace up your walking boots!
