ROHAN TAMAR WATERPROOF OVERHEAD PONCHO | Gear Review

A gear review of the Rohan Tamar Waterproof Overhead Poncho, a long length hooded waterproof smock designed to keep you dry when taking part in your outdoor hobbies.

I love to try new gear, and this is something a bit unusual… A long-length waterproof smock-style coat by outdoor gear specialist Rohan. I’ve had the Tamar for over a couple of months now, and given the amount of rain we’ve had recently, I have been able to test it very thoroughly – and I definitely have some thoughts.

My very short review goes something like this:

The Rohan Tamar is a waterproof overhead poncho designed to keep you comfortable outdoors in wet weather. It provides complete coverage from your head to your knees, reducing your excuses when the weather is bad. It is ideal for meandering and unhurried hikes, casual urban exploring, and for hobbies such as bird watching or nature photography. But it isn’t a do-everything waterproof layer – and doesn’t claim to be. I think it lacks some breathability, and the long length hinders some movement. Wear it for the right activity, and this is a high-quality bit of kit. It has earned its place hanging in readiness by my front door.

Let me explain.

The Rohan Tamar Poncho

I said yes to reviewing this unusual bit of kit because I really like the idea of it; the marketing suggests it could be the perfect ‘I’ll go anyway’ encouragement to get out for lunchtime walks when the weather is pants.

The Rohan Tamar poncho is designed and made very well. Of that, there is no doubt. Made from a durable, waterproof fabric, it effectively shields against rain and wind. The overhead design is practical, providing full coverage without the hassle of full-length zips or buttons to do up. A generous hood with adjustable drawstrings ensures a snug fit that keeps your head dry even in heavy downpours, and the long length means there is no chance your butt or thighs will suffer when out in a storm.

Being a smock, you put it on over your head – there are two large zips at the sides and one down the centre which makes that easy. Those side zips are double ended so you can reach into your trouser pocket, which is a nice touch.

There’s a huge, zipped pocket on the front (which is even lined), and it comes complete with a detachable case for your OS map or guidebook. The Tamar also packs down into a reasonably compact size, making it easy to carry in a backpack or keep in the boot of the car.

What the Rohan Tamar looks like on a real model…

Look and Fit

My main concern was that the Rohan Tamar would look a little bit, er, odd on me. Long-line clothing can make me look even shorter and wider than I am. And while I don’t think this is a fashion statement by any stretch, the more I wear this, the more I like the way it looks. Maybe that’s because it is incredibly practical, and that always trumps fashion. Please don’t tell me otherwise. I’ve even modelled it for you!

Comfort is a key factor when it comes to outdoor gear. The fabric is lightweight yet sturdy, so the poncho doesn’t feel heavy but still drapes well over the body. Bearing in mind this is a unisex garment, I went for the small-medium size, which fits my UK12 body well-enough. The poncho is designed to fit over layers, making it good for all seasons. It’s fine whether I’m wearing a thick sweater or just a t-shirt, providing ample room without being overly bulky. Just don’t wear a hoodie, as that becomes a bit much around the neck.

I maybe would have liked some kind of drawstring cord to cinch in the middle a bit, to make the smock a little more flattering. But to be honest, it’s fine without, and given the limited sizing options, there is probably no way to get the cord in the right place anyway.

The khaki green I’ve got here is the only colour option, by the way. I guess that’s a nod to the fact this is designed for outdoor hobbies like bird watching and fishing, where blending in is part of the fun. I don’t mind the dullness, green works for me, and it suits the garment.

Wet Weather Performance

This thing is great in the drizzle, works a treat, but where it becomes most useful, is in proper rain. You know, the kind of rain that might otherwise seep in in all the gaps, drenching you in minutes. The waterproofing here lives up to its promise, keeping me dry and comfortable. It also offers good wind resistance, which is a bonus on blustery days. I’m a fan.

I love the long length for keeping my lower half more protected than any of my other coats do, and like the fact there is no central zip down to my stomach which might be a weak point in very heavy rain. On more than one occasion I have chosen to walk instead of taking the car to run local errands because I have this poncho, which means it must be decent.

At the top of this post, I mentioned how I don’t particularly rate the breathability of the Rohan Tamar. It’s not terrible, thanks to a large vent at the back, and those long zips at the front and sides – there is some airflow. However, I don’t choose to wear this for any strenuous activities, because as soon as I start to sweat, I get that clammy feeling associated with a lot of rain gear. But this really isn’t the coat for running around anyway, so it’s no bother.

The Rohan Tamar in Use

After testing it extensively over the past couple of months, I can confidently say that this poncho has earned a permanent spot in my outdoor gear collection. Actually, let me clarify that; it’s not even with my other outdoor gear, it’s always hanging by the front door, ready to encourage me to run errands on foot and get out for lunchtime walks even when the weather is particularly rubbish. This has indeed become my ‘no excuses – I’ll go anyway’ waterproof.

As I’ve said, the Rohan Tamar isn’t ideal for strenuous hikes or any kind of fast-moving activity due to its limited breathability, which may not handle proper sweating, and its long length, which will hinder mobility.

However, this poncho excels in everyday use and hobbies. It’s perfect for daily commutes, casual walks, and outdoor activities like bird watching, urban wandering, or gardening. It offers excellent weather protection, is comfortable, and looks like you know what you’re doing outside. It’s a reliable choice for non-strenuous outdoor activities. And you can even sit on a wet bench to drink your flask of tea without getting a wet bum. Win.

You’ll probably not see me wearing this smock in lots of photos on my blog, because I’m not about to start wearing this on my long day hikes or to walk up mountains. But be assured the Rohan Tamar is getting a lot of use in my daily life; it is perfect for my One Hour Outside activities, especially at this time of year.
