Back in April 2010 I was very lucky to win a Soda Stream in a competition run by the company over on Twitter. It’s the Genesis Drinks Maker and I’ve used it a lot over the last couple of years.
It’s not dissimilar to the one I remember we had at home when I was growing up – I specifically remember one in our kitchen in Devonport, Plymouth, but assume we had it before and after then – it was two shades of brown.
Soda Stream are definitely seeing a retro revival of sorts at the moment, and I’m very happy to be a part of it. My drinks maker sits proudly on my kitchen worktop ready to create sodas from (filtered) tap water and syrups for meal times. Up until now I’ve chosen the same flavours over and over again – Pink Grapefruit is probably the most used.
Anyway, the lovely people at Soda Stream sent me some of their other flavours to try out.
There are a selection of flavour ranges for Soda Stream, and here I have the Ginger Ale from the Classics range, and the Grapefruit and Pomegranate from the Clear Plus range. The Ginger Ale is one I will often buy for us anyway, but we haven’t had it for a while. It’s good – not particularly fiery, but has a good flavour. The Grapefruit and Pomegranate one was new to us – it has added antioxidants from natural plant extracts. We were wondering if it would actually taste ok (I’ve never bought the Clear Plus range before) and it does – it’s light and fairly dry, much less sweet than sodas from the Classic flavours but still fruity.
You are supposed to use a cap full of the syrup in each one litre bottle of carbonated water, but we tend to guess rather than measure. Oh by the way, when you’re pouring in the syrup, do it very (very) slowly and be ready to put your hand over the top of the bottle quickly… the mix does have a tendency to fizz over if you’re not careful!
These little packets are from a selection box of seven classic flavours and each makes one bottle of soda. You have the right amount in each vile for one litre of flavoured soda, which makes them a great way to try the flavours to find out which you like. They’re also a great present for someone you know has a Soda Stream. As a result of this I’ll be buying a bottle of Dandelion and Burdock syrup – I’d forgotten how much I enjoyed that drink when I was younger, it brought back lots of nice memories.
Looking at the website for the purposes of this review I see they do a Root Beer flavour. That definitely appeals, I really enjoy that when we go to America, so I shall have to order some.
Thank you to Soda Stream for sending me some syrups to use in my drinks maker.
