ILLUMINATE AT THE BLUE POOL

Illuminate at The Blue Pool is a magical after‑dark winter wander filled with colour, wonder and woodland light, perfect for a joyful One Hour Outside.

There’s a particular kind of magic that happens when you make an effort to step outside on a beautiful winter evening. January is usually when I’m craving that feeling: the quiet, the cold air on my cheeks, the sense of beginning again. And so heading to Illuminate at The Blue Pool on its opening night felt like a great way to claim a winter One Hour Outside.

Illuminate at The Blue Pool

As a Site of Special Scientific Interest, it’s celebrated for its rare beauty and wildlife including rare dragonflies, protected heathland species, and shy deer (oh, and Walter the Peacock!). It’s famous colour‑changing water comes from light scattering through suspended clay particles, giving it a different mood every day – and because of that, it opened to the public in the 1930s and has been quietly loved ever since.

Illuminate is their winter lights trail, winding through the woodland and around the lake, dotted with installations, colour washes, and playful surprises.

It runs through January and February, a small but brilliant stroke of genius in my opinion. No competing with Christmas chaos like most winter lights events, no trying to wedge one more thing into an already overstuffed month. Instead, it becomes a winter treat in its own right, something to look forward to once the New Year has started.

Opening Night Wanderings

Last year’s Illuminate reviews were glowing, but even so, the transformation exceeded our expectations. Seeing a place already full of quiet magic become a world of light and colour felt like stepping into a storybook.

I don’t live locally but was visiting friends who bought tickets for themselves and me. From the moment we stepped onto the trail, the ‘oh wow’ comments started; from the eight‑year‑old, yes, but from us adults too. There’s something lovely about being given permission to be delighted.

The path loops the full way around the lake for over one kilometre, easy to follow but muddy in places (a gentle warning to leave your white Converse at home…). One moment you’re walking through soft woodland glows, the next you’re standing in a clearing flooded with multi‑coloured hexagons, like someone spilled a kaleidoscope across the ground. The inclusion of the fairy trail was another delight: tiny doors tucked into tree trunks, glowing butterflies, gnomes peering out from the undergrowth. It felt playful without being twee.

The trail goes right across the UK’s longest suspended rope bridge, stretching 50 metres across the water. Doing this in the dark felt both adventurous and whimsical; a wobbling, glowing walkway suspended above the lake. Only six people are allowed on at a time, so there was a short wait, but in classic British fashion everyone queued politely, families taking turns without fuss. Crossing it was pure fun: a little sway, a lot of laughter, and a completely different perspective on the lights shimmering around us.

Lights Across the Lake

And then the lake itself. Partially frozen, it became a shimmering stage for a light show set to music. Every ten minutes, a gorgeously curated light show was displayed across the water. The reflections, the ice, the colour, it all layered into something quietly breathtaking. We could have watched that a few times.

We wandered for about an hour and a half, which could easily have stretched longer if the tearoom hadn’t been absolutely packed. Instead, we headed home for hot chocolate, still carrying that warm, fizzy feeling you get after doing something unexpectedly lovely.

Even in the dark, we could see hints of other paths branching away, some that dipped down toward the water and others that went deeper into the trees. My friends and I have already promised ourselves a summer return to explore them properly. The place feels ready to be discovered in every season.

Should You Go?

If you’re local, definitely go. It’s one of those winter evenings that fills you up in a way you don’t quite expect – gentle, colourful, and full of those small delights that make you feel a bit more human again. Tickets start at around £19-£20 for adults, with under‑5s going free, which feels okay enough for the amount of care, creativity, and atmosphere poured into the trail.

For a family, for friends, for anyone who needs a reason to step outside after dark in January, it’s a lovely choice. And if Dorset isn’t on your doorstep, seek out something similar near you. These winter light trails are becoming more common, and they’re such a joyful antidote to the long nights.

Find out more and buy tickets from the team directly. The trail is live until 22 February 2026.

Thanks heaps to my friends for inviting me to join them – what a lovely way to spend One Hour Outside together.
